Some notes about our flies

No two fly tiers tie the same. At Wissahickon Fly Co. we want to make sure you understand what you are getting when buying our flies. There are some standard rules and techniques we follow when creating our flies. Below you will find what they are, so you can spend more time on the water fishing and less time trying to pick your next fly.

The below are our standard practices. As always we can provide custom orders and adjust the patten to meet your needs on the water.

HOOKS

Most of our flies are tied with barbless hooks in order to promote conservation and reduce injury to fish while practicing catch and release. Sometimes we do utulize barbed hooks in our patterns, if there is a barbed hook on the pattern, it will be noted in the description of the fly. Please consider pinching your barbs when you do have a barbed hook.

All our saltwater flies utilize saltwater hooks, but sometimes these patterns are also successful freshwater and will pop up in a freshwater category. When this is the case, we tie the pattern with a saltwater hook. As always, we can adjust this pattern if you do not want saltwater hooks.

TUNGSTIN BEADS

The below chart shows our typical bead size to hook size for tungsten bead head flies. All our tungsten flies on jig hooks utilize a slotted bead. Otherwise you will find the flies are tied with a tungsten cyclopse bead.

Hook Size Bead Size

12 3.0mm

14 2.8mm

16 2.5mm

18 2.3mm

20 2.0mm

LEAD FREE WIRE WRAP

When adding wire wrap to our flies for additional weight we utilize lead free wire wrap. Almost all of our flies with a wire wrap are also sold in a version without the added wire for weight. When looking at the flies side by side in your box it will be nearly impossible to tell which is which. Because of this, all of our weighted wire wrapped flies will have a small painted dot on the bead head of the fly.
